This read me file contains only a minimal description of Control Commander, in Simple Text format. The rest of the documentation is in the "Control Commander Manual".

What is it:
Control Commander is a utility that makes using control panels easier. It displays a list of all the options that can be set with any of the Control Panels that are installed on the computer. The list is divided into logical categories like "Text", "Sound" or "Networks", so it's easy to find the setting you want, and clicking on the list will open the relevant Control Panel. Instead of wasting time searching through thirty or more programs for the one option you want to set, you can look at a single list of all the options available; click on the list and go right to the Control Panel you need !
Control Commander also lets you keep track of the settings that make a Mac your Mac. Do a bit of typing in the built-in editor, and you've got a document that helps you quickly set up any Mac just the way you like it. Instead of wasting hours reconfiguring things after a System crash or upgrade, you can open up your "recipe" in Control Commander and have your Mac back to normal in minutes !
Setting up Control Commander on your Mac is easy since it comes with descriptions of all the standard Apple Control Panels, as well as descriptions of many other popular "third party" Control Panels. The first time you use Control Commander, it automatically creates a list describing all the control panels that are on your computer.
You can use the built in text editor to modify the "Commands List" to suit your specific needs or language preferences. The editor comes with a number of features that make writing descriptions of Control Panels simple; and the resulting files can be added to the "Commands List" with just two clicks of the mouse.
Control Commander also lets you make files that keep track of Control Panel settings. Once you've made a settings file, you can use it as a semi-automated guide to setting up the computer for a particular task.
Control Commander is designed for portability and extensibility. Control Panel descriptions are saved in a format that will allow anyone to quickly add them to their copy of Control Commander. The settings files are also portable, so you can easily set up any Mac to your own specifications.
System Requirements:
Control Commander will run on any Mac that supports the "Appearance" extension. This includes System 7.1 and up. The program needs "Appearance" to run. There are three versions of the application available, one for Power Macs, one for 68K machines (Control Commander 68K), and one for any Mac (Control Commander Fat). The Power Mac version will not run on a machine with a 680X0 CPU. The Appearance extension comes with Mac OS 8 and higher. For instructions on how to get and install it on System 7 machines see the "Appearance" section below.
How Much does Control Commander Cost:
Control Commander is Shareware. The cost of a single copy is $25.
Registration is handled by Kagi Software, and can be done online at http://order.kagi.com/?Q81. Online registration is the quickest way to get your registration number, but requires a credit card.
You can also register by e-mail, fax, or post by using the Register application that comes with Control Commander. Payment may be made by by Credit Card, Check, P.O's etc . Once your payment is received, you will be e-mailed, faxed, or mailed a unique registration number within 4-5 days.

Control Commander will run on any System down to 7.1, provided that the Appearance extension is also installed. The Appearance extension provides Applications with an OS 8 like "look and feel", without all the overhead of System 8.
Apple doesn't seem to have a quick and easy Appearance installer for system 7, but even so, the process isn't all that complex:
• Download both Diskcopy and the Appearance SDK at http://developer.apple.com/sdk/. The Appearance Software development kit (SDK) may be named either "Appearance" or "Appearance SDK".
• After decompressing both files, double-click on the Appearance SDK file. Diskcopy will create a RAM DISK with the Appearance stuff on it.
• Put the Font File ".Keyboard" in the Fonts folder located inside your System Folder.
• Drag the "Preferences" file out of the "Prefs for use with System 7.x" folder and put it in the Preferences folder located inside your System Folder.
• Drag the file "AppearanceCDEV" onto your hard drive and rename it "Appearance". -Note: this is a different version of the "Appearance" control panel which is designed to run under System 7.x. It is NOT the same as the "Appearance" file located on the RAM disk.
•After renaming the file, drag it into the Control Panels folder located inside your System Folder. -You can't just drop it on the system folder, it won't go to the right place.
• Copy the "Appearance Extension" file over to your System folder.
Don't Restart your Mac Yet! Appearance is now installed, but there are a few things you need to do before it will run properly:
• Disable the "Color" and "WindowShade" control panels by putting them into the "Control Panels (disabled)" folder. Appearance supersedes the Color control panel, and both replaces, and is incompatible with the WindowShade control panel.
• Open the "Memory" control panel and select "Modern Memory Manager", or "32-bit clean". Appearance will not operate correctly with the older memory settings. Caution: Don't try to use the "Appearance" control panel before doing this. It will behave badly, and possibly crash !
•Restart your Mac, check out the Appearance control Panel, and Start up Control Commander.

The rest have to do with OS 8, or writing "Appearance compliant Applications", and can be consigned to the dustbin of history.
